Adi is a bit scared by the helicopter, which is fine by me as she sneaks close as we take off, and when I slide an arm over her shoulders she eagerly snuggles in. I breathe in the scent of her. Cherries. So sweet.
Thereâs too much noise to talk as we travel north to her grandmother.
I honestly donât know what to expect when weâre set down on the lawn of the care home. All I did was snatch the phone from Adi when sheâd found someone local and kept saying higher numbers until they agreed to drop everything and organise the wedding. But Adiâs gasp is expressive enough as we walk, my arm still around her waist because Iâm a possessive psychopath, towards a walled garden with a large terrace.
Close to fifty older adults are sitting in curved rows facing a gazebo. As we go through the archway into the garden they break into applause and next to me in her white dress, Adi gapes and blushes.
That blush suits her, and I smile.
âRhys,â she breathes. âHow did all this happen?â
Itâs a riot of colour. The florist has excelled herself. She obviously didnât have enough white flowers, or even flowers of one colour, so the terrace is coated with petals in a rainbow of hues, one into another, in patches. The gazebo looks like itâs made of flowers, mainly pale pastels compared to the more vibrant colours underfoot as we walk to the front where there is an officiant waiting.
Adiâs dress parts the flowers on the ground. Itâs long and white and not as clingy to her perfect curves as I would have chosen for her, but her eyes shone when she saw it.
Thereâs applause, mainly from the care home staff scattered among the residents, as we approach.
âGrandma!â Adi lets out a little shriek of delight as she sees a woman in a chunky high-backed chair at the front.
âGo to her.â I relinquish my hold but Adi doesnât, dragging me with her to her grandmotherâs side. Then theyâre hugging and my heart squeezes at seeing my girl so happy.
âAre you going to introduce me to your young man?â her grandmother asks, with a sardonic slant of an eyebrow.
âThis is Rhys Cavendish,â she says, a bit shyly.
âA pleasure to meet you, Mrs Blake.â I give her what I hope is an ingratiating smile. Iâve never tried one before, so I shouldnât be surprised when she looks down her nose at me, despite my standing over her. She has grey hair in a little bun and is wearing a scoop neck top and cardigan.
âIâm chucked all of a heapâ¦â she says conspiratorially to Adi. âWhere did you find this fine specimen?â
âAhâ¦â Adi meets my eyes and panic flares in hers. âHeâs erâ¦â
âWe met at work.â
âWouldnât mind coming out of retirement if thatâs the sort of men available in the workplace, nowadays,â Adiâs grandmother says, at full volume, to the woman next to her with white hair and dark skin who must be her friend.
